PLC Summary 12/19/12

What thoughts, ideas and learnings did you take away from the PLC Showcase?

We learned a lot of information and received several ideas from the stations we visited.  It was great to see what other professionals are doing to improve learning in their classes.  We wish we could have had more time to visit more of the stations because our time ran out before our intentions.  We learned strategies and technology that we want to implement in our classrooms.  We did not expect as many "unfamiliar" faces cycling through.

Thinking back over your PLC work this semester, what were some of the lessons you have learned?

We  learned that technology is not the end all be all.  Sometimes technology fails.  When technology works, it can be an invaluable tool!  Technology can be incredibly beneficial for our teaching and for students' learning.  It can make learning possible for difficult learners and can increase student engagement.

How might the information gained in questions 1 and 2 impact our professional work?

Because technology is constantly changing, we need to keep updating our knowledge and skills.  It is OK to take risks and OK to fail.  What is important is that we just keep developing and growing so we can help our student develop and grow.

Intel Visual Ranking-Please review and make comments!

Please review the following to see if this makes sense or needs improvement!

**************************

PLC Showcase Planning Sheet
Mr. Williams

What do I want to know from teachers in other communities?

Rank the following items of concern in order of importance:

1.     Discipline policies, i.e., “tardy policy” (I wish we had a school wide plan!)
2.     Technology integration (Do I use technology weekly to enhance learning?)
3.     Laptop policies (Do you give free laptop time? How do you ensure the laptop is not a distraction?)
4.     Tutoring/motivating students to improve grades (What works for you?)

Visual Ranking Setup
-       teachers are placed into groups based on their community
-       teachers are given a login per community
-       teachers rank all survey questions but place a comment in one box!
-       Responses are broadcasted on the projector along with group results
-       Teacher will see their results (by SLC) and compare to other SLC’s
-       Estimated time at table per teacher: 2minutes

PLC Showcase

At the end of our semester of work, all PLCs will be showcasing their work at the Wyandotte High School PLC Showcase on Wednesday, December 12th in the Social Hall.  The showcase will be a public demonstration of our learning, collaboration, and results.  Each PLC will showcase work that reflects how your learning and collaboration has impacted student learning.  Each PLC is encouraged to be creative and innovative in their demonstration (student examples would be highly encouraged); however, please be sure the following are addressed through your presentation -
    PLC Focus
Collaborative Actions
Summary of PLC Learning
Impact on Student Learning
Connections to Future Teaching and Learning
In addition, all staff will have an opportunity to visit each demonstration during the Showcase.  Many outside guests will also be in attendance.

If your PLC requires any kind of additional resources, please submit any requests for those materials via the comment section to this blog entry by NOVEMBER 9th. You will receive these materials by or before your November 28th meeting, so you will have AT LEAST two weeks to work on organizing your demonstration.

10/24 Technology for Differentiation

Today we discussed:

1.  Instagrok, we need more time to explore and manipulate for class.
Pros- lots of information, laid out easily for students, teacher version allows teacher to track views and journal, good reference point
Cons- not always relevant, level sometimes too high, not sure when it should be used during class

2. Mr. Drew

Demonstrated Diigo and showed us how we can use it for reference projects, new use with government, shareable , create groups

3. Mr. Williams

Demonstrated intel Visual Ranking,  used for critical thinking... Prove your reasoning.  Used in music for most important performance and why.  Must use the questions to substantiate the ranking .  Drag in order then comment why.  All set up in advance.  Plans to use with choices of music.  Also has a discuss function for feedback.

Intel has lots of pre-made resources (K- 12), assessments, etc.  All FREE!!
     Rubrics are included as well

 3)  How will the impact of this week’s work be measured?
  • Number of ideas generated and formation of action plan

Purpose: Using Technology for Student Engagement

Topic: Technology for Participation

Reflection Topics:

-We will measure by student scores on class work.

- Mr. Lazell Williams

PLC 8/29/12

1)  What are we going to do over the next week that contributes to our PLC learning topic?
This week we are going to put together a running list of technology that we are willing to try or things that we already do and are willing to share.
2)  How does this contribute to student learning?
Our purpose is to use technology to increase student engagement, by finding what we can learn we are able to implement in the classroom.
3)  How will the impact of this week’s work be measured?
We are measuring student engagement by tally mark on the school loop seating chart function.

PLC meeting 8/29/12

During this week, each member of our PLC will do two things:
1.  Come back with at least 1 "technology" that we want to learn about
2.  Come back with 1 "technology" that we use in our classroom

This will contribute to our PLC's study about technology by serving as a way to see what technology is out there.  From there, we will keep a running list of what we want to learn more about and implement in our classrooms.

We will measure student engagement by individually tracking how much each student is participating in class.  We can also measure engagement by seeing if there are changes in the assignments that students are completing.
